National Philharmonic Concerto Competition
Sunday, September 25, 2011 evening

Eligibility Requirements:
Open to all high school instrumentalists playing a traditional orchestral instrument (not piano).

Prize:
Up to three winners will appear as soloists with the National Philharmonic at concerts for young students on November 14-18, 2011 at the Music Center at Strathmore.

Competition judges have complete discretion in determining the winners or not selecting any winners should no participant meet the minimum performance standard required.

Application:
1. Only highly qualified fully prepared candidates should apply.
2. Application is to be submitted along with a $35 fee payable to the National Philharmonic. Application deadline is at noon on September 2, 2011.
3. Application must be accompanied by a resume and a letter of recommendation from the applicant’s private teacher.
4. Candidates will be pre-screened before the actual competition based on application credentials. Applicants who are not invited to compete based on the pre-screening of credentials will receive a full refund of the application fee of $35.
5. The application form (with cover letter) is available for download here.

Competition Requirements:
1. A solo movement of less than 10 minutes in length uncut, for which there is orchestral accompaniment available for purchase or rental. Submitted solos of greater than 10 minutes in length will disqualify the soloist. It is the intention to present works in their entirety, so cuts are not acceptable and will also disqualify the soloist.
2. Soloist must provide their own accompanist for the competition.
3. Solo must be memorized.
